Overview
Holy Name Medical Center offers a wide variety of opportunities for college students who are considering a health related career. Students can gain exposure in a medical setting, with varying degrees of patient contact. Volunteers provide comfort and encouragement and contribute to the spirit of community within Holy Name.
We offer a program with a minimum commitment of 75 hours of service per year. We have limited opportunities available Monday through Friday for a 4-hour shift either 8 AM - 12 PM or 12 PM - 4 PM. Our program will provide patient contact excluding shadowing a physician.
- Breast Imaging Center (Females Only): Greet patients upon arrival, escort patients, assist with mailings, answer telephones, file, maintain refreshment area and supplies.
- Cancer Center/MS Infusion: Greet patients as they arrive. Provide patient transports and escorts to treatment areas and throughout the hospital. Perform various clerical duties. Prepare and resupply patient treatment areas. Assist staff as needed (Nurses, Technicians, Dieticians, Social Workers).
- Courtesy Desk: Handle miscellaneous errands, discharge patients in wheelchairs to main lobby, escort/transport patients and visitors throughout the hospital, assist with patient flower and gift shop eliveries, assists with one-time projects and mailings.
- Emergency Department: Escort patients or relatives to designated areas (Triage or Patient Rooms). Place wristbands on select patients. Assist patients with wheelchairs (transports).Hand deliver patient labels to patients. Assist with errands, including supplies from the supply room.
- Endoscopy: Escort and transport a patient or family upon release. Serve refreshment, snack, blanket after the procedure. Assist with paperwork.
- Holy Name Pavilion/Psychiatry Unit (Graduate student only): Greet patients as they arrive. Perform various clerical duties. Prepare and resupply patient treatment areas. Assist staff as needed requesting medical records and contacting outpatient providers to coordinate care.
- Nurses Stations: Assist nurses in with transporting/discharging patients, delivery and pickup of supplies, provide patients with water and assist at meal time.
- Operating Room: Assist in transport of patients to OR and from PACU. Clerical or other assigned duties in the OR workroom. Remain with the patient until brought into the OR. Remain at the patient’s side until nursing staff puts the patient back into bed.
- Rehab Services- Inpatient: Observe therapists performing treatments. Assist with preparing daily patient lists for therapists.
- Rehab Services-Occupational Therapy: Greet patients and families. Observe therapists performing treatments. Assist with preparing daily patient lists for therapists. Set up and break down the gym for each session, as directed by the therapist. Remove linens and wipe down stretchers. Set up a gym with fresh towels, hot/cold packs, replenish supplies, etc. Retrieve and file charts. Copy materials.
- Same Day Surgery: Discharge/transport patients and assist nurses.
- Transport: Assist with transport and discharge of patients. Provide wheelchair assistance as necessary. Remain with patients until ground transportation arrives.
