Overview

Palliative care is a team-oriented approach to care for patients with serious illness, regardless of prognosis. It provides pain and symptom management as well as emotional support to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

Holy Name's palliative care program is an integral part of the Medical Center's Supportive Care services. Palliative care is provided to patients who are hospitalized or for those living at home with their condition, through the outpatient palliative clinic or through the Patricia Lynch Cancer Center. Palliative care is appropriate for patients at any age and during any stage of a serious illness. It may accompany curative treatment.

Palliative care is an interdisciplinary and comprehensive model of care that includes a team of specially trained doctors, nurses, social workers, pharmacists and additional experts. They help with symptoms such as pain, nausea, vomiting, anxiety, shortness of breath, insomnia, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue and others.

Holy Name offers other unique services through palliative care, including:

  • Neuropsychologist
  • Pharmacist
  • Transportation within Bergen/Hudson counties
  • On-site pharmacy
  • Medical marijuana program providers
  • Telehealth visits
  • Sickle cell program
  • Spanish-speaking staff
