Life After Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery is not a quick fix. The recovery process is gradual. The changes in your body can last a lifetime if you follow your doctor’s recommendations.

Your Recovery

After surgery, about 80% of the patients go home after one night stay.

You eat a special liquid diet for one week, then move to soft foods.

You need to drink a lot of water and take supplements to get the necessary vitamins and minerals and keep yourself hydrated.

Eventually, you can eat solid foods.

Living Lighter

Your surgery is a step on your journey toward weight loss. Along the way, you will make many lifestyle changes.

As you lose weight, you are likely to
  • eat less
  • find it easier to exercise
  • see positive changes in your body shape, mental well-being, and physical health
Ongoing Support

At Holy Name Medical Center, we understand that maintaining weight is easier when you have support. We offer encouragement and help you stay on track.

Our team of dietitians, exercise specialists, and support groups partner with you for follow-up care. We help you with:

  • Exercise goals, like:
    • Start walking as soon as you can after surgery.
    • Get at least 30 minutes of daily moderate activity.
    • Add activities to build strength and stamina, like running or weightlifting.
  • Lifestyle changes, such as:
    • avoiding alcohol
    • quitting smoking
  • Nutrition guidelines, including:
    • drinking enough water
    • eating foods low in starch and sugar
    • taking prescribed mineral and vitamin supplements

To achieve your goals, be sure to follow your doctor’s recommendations for diet and exercise and take your medicines as prescribed.

Your doctor may prescribe weight loss medications to help you lose additional weight. After losing significant weight, you may need follow-up surgery to remove excess skin. That is something you and your doctor can discuss as you recover.
