James Christopher Mendler, MD, specializes in sports medicine, including concussion management and nonsurgical musculoskeletal medicine. Dr. Mendler also has expertise on providing assistance and advice on living a healthy lifestyle, with an emphasis on healthy eating and regular physical activity.
Dr. Mendler has been practicing sports medicine in New Jersey since 1998, including several years in private practice before joining the Holy Name Physician Network. He has served as a team physician, school physician and/or consulting physician for various schools and athletic programs for over 20 years, including Rutgers University, William Paterson University, Ramapo College, Waldwick Schools, Immaculate Heart Academy, the Academy of Holy Angels, and many others.
Dr. Mendler had the privilege of serving as the Head Team Physician for the U.S. National Team in the 1999 Long Course Triathlon World Championships in Säter, Sweden; as a Team Physician for the New Jersey Gladiators Arena League Football Team; and, alongside many of his Holy Name colleagues, as the assistant physician to the medical director of the 2012 Ironman Triathlon Championships, NYC, a race spanning both the New York and New Jersey sides of the Hudson River. Additionally, Dr. Mendler has served for over ten years as a member on the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, the primary governing body for high school sports in New Jersey.
Dr. Mendler is a graduate of Bergen Catholic High School, Oradell, NJ. He received his bachelor's degree from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD; his medical degree from New Jersey Medical School; his internship and residency training from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School; and his fellowship training at the Methodist Sports Medicine Center, Indianapolis, IN, part of the Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Mendler served as chief resident during his final year of residency training, and was the recipient of the "Chief Resident of the Year Award" from the New Jersey Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.
Dr. Mendler enjoys providing care to active individuals of all ages, from youth sport athletes to active seniors, and from professional and elite competitors to recreational and casual exercisers. He has been a frequent recipient of the Top Doctor Award from Castle Connolly and Bergen Magazine.
